My story
In high school, I was honored to be voted "most likely to succeed." I dedicated long hours to studying in university and landed an entry-level role in Human Resources. Transitioning into retail operations management with Target felt like a historic moment for Canada. Despite the company's bankruptcy, it was a crucible moment for me as a leader - having to motivate and engage a team through an unexpected situation that impacted each of my team members differently.

Fast forward a decade and I have built a career in human resources, learning and development and talent management that I could have only dreamed of. But, becoming a mother and then a working parent was way more difficult than I could have imagined. I found myself having to choose between having a voice on a 4pm conference call or taking the call from the car on mute and being on time for school pick up. Right before my last little one was born, I heard "it was a shame I was headed out on maternity leave for a year because I needed a few more months to be ready for that promotion". That hurt. It still hurts. I had been working my butt off for the last year to over-deliver and prove I was ready for the next level and it felt like a waste.

So after being sufficiently mad, I re-prioritized my time and energy. I said "no" more times than "yes". I invested in those who I led and built partnerships with those who I could trust. I leaned into new opportunities and amazing advice. I took a certification course. I found research-based activities and approaches to integrate into my life. And I worked through little 't' trauma in my life. Now, I feel more confident about taking ownership in my career and it has led me to being more fulfilled at work and at home.
